Miessence Organics
Miessence Organics, from Australia, are the world's first extensive line of certified organics such as skin care, cosmetics, hair care, body care, and nutrition. The products were originally created in one of the founders' (Narelle Chenery) kitchen because of her frustration in being mislead by a natural skin care company. The company marketed that their products were "the best products from science and nature" and promoted them as natural but in fact they were not.
Narelle began to promote this companies products to her friends and family until she discovered the truth about them. This frustrated her and so she began to look into ways to create skin care products with safe organic ingredients.
She initially gave her creations away as gifts but soon her hobby grew into a nice business. She wrote articles and had them published in several of the leading natural health magazines. About a eighteen months later, at an expo for natural products, she was approached by Alf Orpen, future cofounder, who was impressed by her knowledge and products and challenged her to create a fully certified organic skin care range.
Many claimed that it wouldn't be possible and that Narelle were wasting time attempting it but after about a year and a half of R&D and testing Miessence organics became the world's first certified organic skin care and cosmetic line. The products were tested by a third party and passed flawlessly which shook the multi billion dollar natural cosmetics industry. Miessence was awarded the organic certification in early 2001.
Narelle is now on a mission to help educate consumers about the harmful effects of the synthetic chemicals that we put on our bodies and she says "Once consumers realise that health and beauty are inextricably linked, they will have to seriously question those unpronounceable ingredients in their 'beauty' products. We, as consumers, are incredibly powerful. Most of the time we just don’t realise it!"
Miessence organics are very popular in Australia where the consumers are more aware of the benefits of organic certification over products labeled "natural" but Miessence products are becoming much more popular in the US and Canada as the people become more educated about the positive benefits of organically certified products and the negative effects of harmful chemicals found in traditional and "natural" skincare and cosmetics
